How this scam works

- Fake donation QR codes / UPI IDs — labeled things like "Protest Legal Defence Fund" or "Student Medical Relief," shared as forwards with no way to verify who actually controls the account. Money sent this way lands in untraceable mule accounts, not real legal aid.
- Malicious "official" apps — APK files (not from the Play Store) marketed as an "Official Protest Voting App" or "Member Portal." Once installed, these can intercept OTPs, read call logs, and grant remote access to banking apps.

- A UPI ID, QR code, or payment link for "legal defence," "medical relief," or bail funds, shared outside a verified official account
- A link to install an app outside the Play Store — an APK file, not a store listing
- Urgency — "donate now, students are being arrested," paired with a push to act immediately
- A request for OTPs, banking PINs, or remote-access permissions from an app claiming to be for "verification" or "voting"
- Brand-new accounts claiming to represent the movement, with no track record
What to do instead
- Don't scan QR codes or pay UPI IDs from forwarded messages, no matter how urgent they sound
- Don't install APK files from links — use official app stores only, and verify the publisher first
