Is this Cockroach Movement donation or app a scam?
Fraudsters are using India's viral Cockroach Movement protests to push fake UPI donation links and malicious "official" apps.
India's youth-led Cockroach Movement is real news — but its viral reach has drawn criminals who spin up fake donation links and fake "official" apps. This page is about those scams only, not the protest or the politics around it.
Why this scam works
The real movement has genuine legal and medical costs, real arrests, and millions of sympathetic followers moving fast on social media. That mix of urgency, sympathy, and scale is exactly what scammers look for.
Signs it’s fake
- A UPI ID, QR code, or payment link labeled "legal defence fund," "medical relief," or similar, shared outside a verified official account
- An APK link or "install this app for official updates / voting / membership" — legitimate protest coordination doesn't require an app outside the Play Store
- Urgency ("donate now, students are being arrested") paired with a request for OTPs, banking PINs, or remote-access permissions
- Accounts that appeared only in the last few days claiming to represent the movement
- Requests forwarded through WhatsApp/Telegram chains with no way to verify the original source
What to do instead
- Don't scan QR codes or pay UPI IDs from forwarded messages, no matter how urgent they sound
- Don't install APK files from links — only use official app stores, and only after verifying the publisher
- If you want to support arrested students or legal aid, find it through a verified, named organization's official website — not a forwarded link

Is the Cockroach Movement itself a scam?
No. This page is not about the protest movement — it's about criminals exploiting its popularity with fake donation links and fake apps. We take no position on the movement or the politics around it.
I already scanned a "donation" QR code and paid
Contact your bank or UPI provider's fraud line immediately and file a report with India's National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or dial 1930.
I already installed one of these apps
Uninstall it, turn on airplane mode, then contact your bank to freeze/monitor your account before reconnecting. Change banking passwords from a different, clean device.
Is this page a substitute for official advice?
